5-Budget Friendly SPAs In Marrakech You Will Be Happy Naked At.
Hello, I’m Hassan and I’m from Marrakech.
From personal experience, I know firsthand how tourists tend to have a Moroccan hamam upon arrival or before flying out at any SPA they can find, even if it’s not the best for them.
It is your responsibility, as a visitor, to ensure that you and your companions are heading to the right place. because if you don’t, your trip will turn into a nightmare.
Here are some common problems you will be facing if you didn’t pick the right place.
- The masseuses who performed the hamam would be more interested in their mobile phones, giggling and chattering rather than carrying out their work and taking care of you and your people.
- the smell of smoke and phones beeping inside that prevent you from the relaxation you desire.
- the hammam process wouldn’t be explained to you, so after each stage, you will be left to ‘relax’ but you wouldn’t know how long for or why.
- cold water and steam room temperature.
- low-quality cosmetic products that would cause skin allergies and problems.
- offensive stuff that could tease and laugh at you naked because of your body shape.
- the spa would not provide any disposable underwear, sleepers, or flip-flops. nor towel to dry yourself after the hammam.
- The message Area and the hamam are far from each other. you have just done a hamam you won’t have enough energy to walk a long distance.
- only big sized robes and sliders available.
- give you less time than what you paid for. very common.
- unprofessional-high pressure scrubbing and massage.
- one person treating more than 2 individuals.
Ect…
to avoid all those Hustles there are a few recommendations you should follow and tips you should do, that I will be revealing to you in just a moment.
First, you should have a clue about the Moroccan hammam and have an idea of how it works and the steps you will go through before doing it.
Just like the Moroccan hammam at home, outdoor hammam is also a process that involves rinsing, soaping, wrapping, and relaxing.
And it works this way :
You are first rinsed with warm/hot water from the room’s center basin while lying down with a bucket or small bucket used to scoop the clean water. After that, the technician will rinse your skin with a softly scented soap called Savon Beldi aka black soap. You will be touched all over, including your breasts/chest and buttocks, every inch of your body should have it on. However, if you have any concerns, please convey them to the personnel before beginning your treatment.
The gummy will next exfoliate your skin using a Kessa (exfoliating glove), olive oil, and black olive pulp soap.
The majority of decent SPAs in Marrakech utilize natural and locally produced materials that smell fantastic.
You’ll then lay with the paste on your skin as the dry heat helps detoxify and cleanse.
After another rinse, your skin will be covered with a gray clay called ghassoul, extracted from the Middle Atlas Mountains Full of minerals and vitamins that will regenerate and nourish your skin.
Ten minutes of dry heat with the wrap followed by another rinse, and you are ready for a wash and shampoo – the shampoo is optional, but highly recommended and pretty suggested.
Keep in mind that there will be some flipping over, standing, sitting, and so on during the entire process; the therapist will guide you on what to do next.
After a gentle dry, you can put your robe back on and head to a relaxation area, where you can unwind on a lounge chair covered by a blanket while enjoying aromatic tea and snacking on sweet cookies.
Ching-chang! Your hammam is done.
The second tip is, that you should have an understanding of Moroccan culture and what to expect.
and that’s the reason behind the site, is to help you unveil morocco from all sides.
like most Arab Muslim countries, there is a separation by gender in some locations. There aren’t so many here in Morocco, but the Hamam and the mosque are the most obvious.
Therefore, do not expect to have the experience as a couple in the same room although they call it a Romance package, love package, intimate package …whatever… however If you are a married couple you could, just show the person in charge a piece of paper that approves your statement.
the bottom line, they call it that way for no reason.
Side notes:
- bring your shampoo and other personal amenities if you want them to use it while washing you.
- take the courage to stop the masseuses if they are chattering and laughing. or speak to the person in charge. I’m sure he will take action. Some SPAs employ non-educated professionals.
- desire a nice relaxing massage? make sure you get separate rooms. If there are two therapists in the same room it would have the best environment to start chattering and giggling.
- If you are a group of two people, it means no offense if you have 1 attendant implementing the hamam. in some cases, the SPA may have a big waitlist of bookings who deadly need the hamam to relax and rest after or before the Trip. so, to make that happen and to make others benefit, one gummy will switch between two. It’s not bad because You normally will be left to relax multiple times during the hamam process for 5 to 10 min max anyways alone or with somebody. yet, while you are doing so the gummy could switch to your partner. And vice versa
- If your skin is allergic to Argan oil, any other oils or honey tell the team to not put it on your skin. Most Moroccan SPAs utilize cosmetic products that are based on Argan and Honey, tell them or your face will turn swollen and red like a strawberry the day after if you don’t.
- Lady, try to remove your makeup before doing a hamam, the rooms are steam saunas, better go with a bare face and give space to the pores to do the work.
- Bring cash. you will need it to pay. A wide number of local establishments here in Morocco accept cash only. unfortunately. and to tip, if you were happy with the experience.
- You do pay before you have any services, so don’t be put off. It’s just a Moroccan thing.
- if you are a married couple wanting to do the hamam and massage together in the same rooms. go early in the morning so not so many people are waiting.
- read other trip advisor reviews to have a global overview of what to expect.
…which brings us to our last tip of the day.
When you are choosing your spa try to pay attention to thriving reviews on Trip Advisor or other sites.
It doesn’t always mean professional. Some SPAs have fake reviews, others force the client to type 5 star review in front of them in the SPA although they are not happy with it.
That’s why I’m below setting up 5 budget-friendly SPAs in Marrakesh you could go to if you want a nice calming Hamam without all the hustles I mentioned so far.
Disclaimer
Our recommendations and insights are based on real personal and friends’ experiences. not only that it’s also based on people’s reviews on Trip Advisor and google reviews.
Alphais Spa:
Among the few who have successfully cracked the code of the good value equation.. best quality service, the best photo opportunity, and the best price .
maybe just because it is a proudly women-operated establishment.
do not judge how it looks on the outside, once you step in, the magic happens. you will enter a different world.
After extending a warm welcome, you will Be provided with disposable thongs/boxers, and comfy slippers to wear around the spa, then escorted to a changing room where you can securely store your belongings in an electronic locker, accessible with a unique six-digit code.
Everything here is sublime; authentic yet luxurious. The steam treatment room is beautiful with dark blue mosaic tiles consisting of two tile benches with small inflatable pillows.
I highly recommend the 45-minute hamam with black soap exfoliation, with a ghassoul (clay) wrap, and a 20-minute back massage plan at the price of USD 39.
FARNATCHI SPA:
Meet Ahmad and Meriem, two professional therapists you will be meeting when you book a session at La FARNATCHI SPA.
These two individuals would certainly make your experience so magical, they understand and they make you feel understood, while you didn’t even need to speak to them nor did they ask you where the next treatment should occur.
They recognized and headed straight to work in the areas in demand without making you involved in the process.
The place is just a normal calm oasis a few meters away from the top end of the city center 10-minute walk from Spice-market (Cafe Des Epices).
it’s not the best if you are looking for a magical photo opportunity spot. However, it’s where to go if you are looking for a well-done Moroccan hammam at a very compelling price.
Like others, FARNATCHI SPA offers a variety of packages, yet I recommend the royal Hamam and tonic massage with Ahmed or Meriem at very compelling price.
Le Bain de Kasbah:
Want a hammam experience with your children in the same room? then book at Le Bain de Kasbah.
Unlike most SPAs in Marrakech that insist on separating the visitors by gender no matter their age.
The Kasbah were among the first who accommodated families together in the Hammam.
They have special family packages starting at the price of 35 USD including the hammam and 45 min massage for the kids. However, the adult will pay 55 US dollars for 1 hour of exfoliation and a-45-minute massage package.
I’m sure the staff will treat you and the kids royally in the meantime, they are providing a very compelling offer compared to other SPAs right there, maybe because they are new. they had been there for just a year and a half from the day I was writing this blog post, which makes the SPA facilities look new and clean.
The SPA is located in an easy-to-find area in the old Kasbah next to the big mosque Moulay Yazid where a lot of shops are around.
The establishment preserved more of the Moroccan sense of decor and they have a nice waiting hall where tourists can speak with each other. It’s not fancy but it’s not bad either.
After a very warm welcome just like others, you will be given a room to change, a locker, robes, towels, and paper pants needed.
The Hammam will take place in a steam room where each has a shower inside.
The place is run very professionally, and you can WhatsApp to book.
After the hammam scrub and the application of different oils and washes, you will be taken to a beautiful little room in your robes with comfortable relaxing couches for Moroccan tea until it is time for your massage.
the therapist will implement all the massage steps in a very detailed, relaxed, and strong-strong in a very good way.
I bet in the end you are going to feel that the service offered is worth way much more than the 55 USD per package. you would pay that for just the massage alone.
Heritage SPA:
In a quite difficult location to find further away from the high-traffic touristy area of Marrakesh, Heritage SPA is a pleasurable experience that is worth looking for. but if you are lost nearby, call the phone number attached below and tell them to send someone to pick you up. I’m certain they will have pleasure in doing so because the staff are pros and have excellent phone booking communications.
They are also among the few SPAs in Marrakesh that provide appointment booking via Instagram.
The receptionists are friendly and fluent in several languages. They speak English, and French as well as Arabic and Spanish.
They offer multiple packages yet the Heritage Romance for couples is the most famous. for 190 USD including 2x Tradition Hamam for 45 minutes, 2x Holistic massage for an hour, 1x Relaxing foot massage, and 1x Skin Facial.
Tea and biscuits are served between scrub and massage not upon arrival as others do.
to avoid any miss-expectation, as I mentioned earlier although they call it romance for 2 people, do not expect to have the entire package as a couple in the same room.
At Heritage SPA you will be together in the same room for the hammam part, but get separated for the full body massage, foot massage, and facial…
Hammam Paradis:
If you are looking for an experience from another level then Hammam Pardis is the SPA you are Looking for. simply because they are specialized and have been there for decades.
They offer a wide range of treatments at reasonable prices. I recommend royal hammam treatment with body scrub And 60 min to 30 min tonic massage at the price of
while It all started with generous hospitality upon arrival and the provision of tea and Moroccan biscuits. After that, they would move you to the place designated for the massage, show you where to change, and give you lockers where you could keep your belongings.
along the way, you will be in love with the place and the decoration.
Paradis is known for its Massage staff, they implement massage in a very wonderful and professional manner.
This place is highly recommended for solos, and friends.
Feel free to visit their site for further details, or check people’s reviews on trip advisor.
The Bottom line
The hammam experience is far more than just going to a fancy spa in a very beautiful place with a very fancy pool, and the best photo opportunity… it’s actually the best way to discover the rituals, the culture, and the traditions of the city.
One of the critical components to having a wonderful experience beyond the place itself is the staff, they must be helpful, professional, kind, and educated enough to implement the bathing rituals correctly.
however, If your main focus is enjoying a professional bathing experience, and you’re not primarily concerned with the opulence of the setting, we invite you to explore our blog post featuring the 5 best budget-friendly spas in Marrakesh.
