Guide to Taking the Train in Morocco: Routes, Stations, and Ticketing

Traveling by train is one of the most convenient ways to see Morocco, connecting key cities across the country. This guide will help you understand train routes, stations, and how to buy tickets for both high-speed and classic train journeys.

Trains frequently depart from Marrakech to Casablanca, Fes, Rabat, Tangier, and other major destinations, making this station a key starting point for journeys across Morocco.

Moroccan Train Routes

High-Speed Line (Al Boraq)

 This line uses Africa’s first high-speed trains, Al Boraq, which are modern and comfortable, reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph).

trains are comfortable, double-deck trains with 1st and 2nd class seating, as well as a café-bar. If you hold a 1st class ticket, you can access the Al Boraq lounges at Tangier, Kénitra, Rabat Agdal, and Casablanca Voyageurs stations.

Classic Lines (Al Atlas)

Tangier to Fes via Meknes.

Fes to Casablanca via Meknes and Rabat, continuing on to Marrakech.

There’s also a bus connection from Marrakech to Agadir and Essaouira, operated by Supratours, a subsidiary of Moroccan Railways.

Al Atlas trains offer 1st and 2nd class air-conditioned coaches, with a food trolley service available. Tickets come with a reserved seat, ensuring you’ll have a place even on busier journeys.

Marrakech Train Station

Marrakech’s train station is a hub of activity and a well-equipped gateway to other major cities. Located near the lively Gueliz neighborhood, it’s easy to reach by bus from Medina. 

Here’s what you’ll find at the station:

  • Facilities: The station has restaurants, fast food outlets (including McDonald’s and Starbucks), a currency exchange, newsagents, and various shops. Public restrooms are free and well-maintained.
  • Architecture: Built in 2008, the station’s grand entrance, high ceiling, and traditional Moroccan décor create a stunning first impression.
  • Nearby Landmarks: The “Theatre Royal” is right across the street, adding to the area’s vibrant atmosphere.

Buying Train Tickets in Morocco

Option 1

You can book tickets up to 3 months in advance on the official ONCF website. The site accepts most international credit cards, though issues may arise occasionally.

Here’s a quick rundown of the ticket types and pricing:

  • Al Boraq High-Speed Trains: Prices are dynamic. Early bookings get better rates, while last-minute fares are more expensive.
  • Al Atlas Classic Trains: Also feature flexible pricing, with discounts for advance purchases.

Option 2:

Purchase Through Trusted Travel Agencies

If you need extra assistance booking, try third-party sites like 12go.com or Bookaway.com. These agencies make it easy for travelers outside Morocco to book in English with international credit cards.

Option 3:

Buy Tickets at the Train Station

Tickets are available for purchase directly at train stations, and many now accept both cash and credit cards. Note that sleeper berths on overnight trains require a passport for booking, as they count as overnight accommodations.

Option 4:

Book through Trusted Local Travel Agencies for Sleeper Trains

If you need to book a sleeper (couchette) on the popular Marrakech-Tangier overnight train, this can be done through agencies like Marrakech Tickets or  Travel Link. These agencies can also arrange ticket collection or delivery if you’re booking from outside Morocco.

Example Routes and Ticket Prices

  • Marrakech to Casablanca: Travel time is around 2 hours and 42 minutes by high-speed train. Fares: 135 dirhams (2nd class), 180–215 dirhams (1st class).
  • Marrakech to Rabat: The high-speed train takes about 3 hours and 29 minutes. Fares: 200 dirhams (2nd class), 240–285 dirhams (1st class).
  • Marrakech to Tangier: High-speed trains take approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes. Fares: 360 dirhams (2nd class), 240–285 dirhams (1st class).

Bus Connections to Agadir & Essaouira

Supratours, owned by Moroccan Railways, offers regular bus services from Marrakech to Agadir and Essaouira, with the following options:

-Marrakech to Agadir: Buses run about every hour, taking 3.5 hours. Tickets cost roughly 110 dirhams.

-Marrakech to Essaouira: Buses depart every 2–3 hours, taking around 3 hours. Combined train and bus tickets are available at Moroccan railway stations.
